Friday 24th April
Hello my mini Einsteins,
How are things with you? Today is science lesson day 🔬 I love a messy science lesson that has the potential to go drastically wrong so let’s do it!
Ever heard of a non-Newtonian fluid? 🤷No? Not surprised. It isn't something that comes up in general conversation regularly... until now that is.
Firstly, let’s watch this short YouTube video that explains what is meant by a non-Newtonian fluid.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fnd-2jetT1w
Did you enjoy that? Now it’s our turn to make oobleck - a non-Newtonian substance. While I made some the other day I created a time-lapse video for you so you can watch how I made mine. I have attached the recipe that I used and also a video of my end product so you know what you are aiming for. It has the strangest consistency that does the weirdest things so enjoy making it but enjoy playing with it even more! Study it closely and watch how it changes from a solid to a liquid just by applying and releasing pressure.
Now, before you start it’s very important that you follow the rules below:
- Ask your mum or dad if it’s ok to use the cornflour in the cupboard. If you don’t have any but would like to do the experiment ask if it could be added to the next shopping list and then wait patiently for it. You will be able to access this post for a long time.
- Ask someone what equipment you are allowed to use. I used items from my kitchen which worked well but mum might prefer you to use something from the shed 😁 it gets messy but is very easily cleaned so don’t panic.
- Do this experiment outside! As you can see from my video it can get messy but as I said before it washes out very easily.
- You had fun doing the experiment so have fun cleaning up after yourself! 😁
I really hope you enjoy doing this. We had lots of fun! Send me a picture or video of you making your cornflour slime and I could use it for our post on Monday. Make sure you pass on the message about sending me pictures, videos or work before Saturday in case some people missed the post.
Happy investigating.
