How were the materials needed to build the Titanic lifted?
What a question for a Wednesday afternoon! Today we thought about the construction of the Titanic and exactly how all of the heavy equipment needed to build it was lifted. Thousands of tonnes of steel, iron, wood and other materials were needed to build the Titanic back in 1912 but hydraulic cranes and other sophisticated lifting equipment did not exist. So how did they do it?
The answer... using levers and pulleys. Today P7 investigated the force needed to lift various objects from around the classroom and how the use of a pulley meant that much less force was required to lift it.
Can you remember what happens to the force needed to lift an object if a two pulley system is used?
