Have you ever wondered how a boat moves through water? During our topic time we investigated the science behind a boat moving forward in water. We discussed a variety of ways that could make a boat move but focused on an engine making a propeller spin. We discussed how the propeller must force the water backwards to propel the boat forward. We used this theory to create a boat out of corrugated plastic that would move through a trough of water using only the energy from an elastic band. We realised how hard designers and engineers work as it took many mistakes to figure out a successful design.
